storing firearms in storage units

Would this be illegal? As long as the firearms were all legal I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I'm thinking along the lines of semi auto rifles.I could possibly see how storing ammo in the same unit may possibly violate some law. P.S. I live in NY.
Anyone?

Don't think the law doesn't know about your storage unit. If they decide to hit you they will look in to everything. I would recommend PVC tubes.

I doubt any "laws", maybe the agreement with your storage provider.

It might not be against the law, but I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Storage unit break ins are so common and there aren't any places to hide things inside a storage unit either.

In a strong safe bolted down or Treadlok steel box,...pay cash for the unit.

I worked in the South Pacific with a fellow who had a storage unit in Colorado. His story was that someone had rented an attached unit and cut cut holes in the side to gain access to the adjoining units. Among other things my friend lost a nice Benelli shotgun.

Legal? - dunno. Check the rental/lease agreement. Prudent? - in my opinion no. I've had similar thoughts and have come to the conclusion that more bad can come of this than good. Just my two cents.

I know someone who had a quite an inventory of nice MBR kits and other gun parts in a storage unit in upper state NY, it flooded in that area about three years ago, he couldn't get to the storage unit before the water came up, water was six feet deep at the storage location for at least a week, and all those gun parts were lost.

If you don't hold it, you don't own it.

I can say that if you are trying to store them in a unit at one of the bigger chain storage unit companies the lease will usually list stuff that isn't allowed and firearms and ammo are usually on said list.

Don't know about a smaller mom and pop type setup, maybe they would let you, but you obviously don't want to come out asking.

If you need to store a gun outside the house, a pawn shop is your best choice. For a small fee, they will provide secure storage for your gun(s).

Can you get them back like that from a pawn shop without having to do go through NICS and generate a yellow sheet?

That's terrible! Then again, in most storage units, there isn't much separating them. I also think about the people I have met in my life who have lived in a storage unit when they didn't have much money. Wouldn't be too hard to case the place when you live there.

Well, you already own when you pawn it, and yet you still have to yellow sheet it when you redeem it out of pawn. How would storing it there be any different? You'd still be paying the pawn shop for a service.

I know someone in the pawn shop business and I'm going to ask them next time I see them. I'm betting any guns being 'stored' at a pawn shop would have to be yellow sheeted on the way out the door.

Besides, if you don't hold it, you don't own it.

Re: storing firearms in storage units

There are no restrictions on them in my case. The owner is a pro-2A friend. Again, use your best judgement whether or not the unit is secure as can be and firearms are stored in steel safes or heavily weighted Treadlock boxes, or large, lockable jobsite tool boxes. Use filled ammo cans for added weight.

Choose a small, live-in mom/pop facility with lights/cameras/restricted access hours and concrete walls and steel doors.

BTW, some of the large facilities are downright unmanageable in regards to crime.

Lots of places frown on it because where Guns are ammo is not too far behind and they classify that stuff as explosives.

It becomes really hairy when you start to ask questions about it because they may red flag your account.

My cousin had some stuff stolen from a storage unit. Turns out the interior walls were just 8 feet high and didnt go to the peak. The guy just hopped from unit to unit looking for things to take.
